HUTU (Hop-Uo Tracer Unit)

Postby Roger on 25 Jul 2008 06:19

There are a few ways to do this mod, all are a cheaper way to go than then TM or AVP tracer unit. It's many peoples opinion this mod is the best way to go for a tracer system. Regardless of opinions, this system works well.

Jawz has taken the mod even further by adding more LED's into the system resulting in a brighter glow of the Bb. I'm sure he will add his version to this thread so you can see another option on how to build this.

If you don't want to track down the parts, we have a limited supply left & can sell you the uninstalled system for $20. Otherwise you can find all the parts on E-bay or at your local electronics store.

Here's the instructions:

Step #1 ~ Determine Location for LED

a. Find the best location on the "Feed Neck" of the hop-up, where the LED can be installed without disrupting anything.

Step #2 ~ Mark & drill hole

a. Once you have found the right spot for the LED, use a small scratch awl for metal hop-ups, or utility knife for plastic hop-ups to create a dimple for the drill bit.

Image

b. Secure the hop-up & drill a 5mm hole in desired location.

c. Using a rat tail file, clean any burrs left in hop-up from drilling.

Step #3 ~ Install LED

a. Put LED into hole being careful not to over insert, which will cause Bb's to jam.

b. When you have the proper depth, check by dropping a Bb down the feed neck. If the Bb doesn't clearly pass through, adjust the LED accordingly.

c. When you have the right depth for the LED, glue securely into place. ( On plastic hop-ups, a hot glue gun works best. For metal hop-ups, super glue works best. I use Locktite 414.)

d. While glue is setting up, double check LED depth by dropping Bb through.

Step #4 ~ Route Wires

a. Slide the inner barrel with hop-up back into the upper receiver. Make sure to guide wires through small hole that leads to the fore grip. ( Be careful not to kink the wires as you secure the hop-up into place.)

Step #5 ~ Mount Battery pack & switch

a. Attach the connectors together before determining location for battery pack & switch. ( Keep in mind how much room you'll need to store your AEG battery.)

Image

b. Once wire connectors are attached & you have selected the proper spot for battery pack & switch, super glue them securely into place. ( Be careful not to get any glue onto the toggle of the switch.)

Image

c. Use a zip tie to secure any wiring, as needed.

Step #6 ~ Install batteries & turn on to check connections

a. Install two 3v lithium coin cell batteries.

b. Turn switch on and check LED for proper connections of system.

One should work, assuming you have the proper LED, but TWO works even better. Jawz has put up a detailed case report on his version of the HUTU. You should really read through his report. He has definitely done his research and thought through ,seemingly, every possible aspect of this mod. Here's a pic he has of an AK hop-up with TWO LED's.

My thread will help you get a tracer system in your gun, Jawz' case report will help you put the best version of this mod in you gun. Personally, I'm switching my HUTU over to the way Jawz has done his.

Good luck ;)
